When British people write X after everything, are they being serious or trying not to be awkward?

I used to put xxx at the end of my statuses on Facebook. Then to be polite to my American associates I stopped doing it. Then my British friends asked if I was OK, as I'd also stopped ending comments with x.
As it's my Facebook account, I think I'm going to do it again, because I'm British and it's what we do. If you don't like it then you can sod off!!! xxx
